New Zealand discharged its final COVID-19 patient on Wednesday after five consecutive days where no new cases of the illness had been reported.

"Currently there is nobody in hospital with COVID-19, following the discharge of one person," Ashley Bloomfield, the country's director general of health, said.

New Zealand and its Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern have earned global praise for a quick and strong response to the pandemic. New Zealand saw 1,504 coronavirus cases and 21 deaths, according to data from Worldometers.
