First in American history: Toilet flush heard over phone during Supreme Court hearing

In what is doubtlessly a first in the history of the American republic, on Wednesday the sound of a toilet flush could be heard echoing over official Supreme Court proceedings.

Oral arguments were proceeding for Barr v. American Association of Political Consultants, which were being conducted over telephone — also a first — due to the coronavirus pandemic. The distinct flushing sound could be heard as attorney Roman Martinez was speaking to the court.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai rushed to clarify the commission's position on the flushing sound.
