Florida governor issues stay-at-home order for southern part of state

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered residents of the state's southern region to shelter in place starting Monday, an effort to curb the growing number of coronavirus cases in the area.

DeSantis has resisted locking down his entire state as numerous other American governors have done. He said he favored a more regional approach to managing the outbreak in his state. The governor has already shut down in-restaurant dining, gyms, and other normally high-density industries in the state, including the popular Broward and Palm Beach county beaches.

DeSantis said the lockdown would continue through "the middle of May," after which the state would "see where [it's] at."
