Police in Florida say a man committed second-degree murder the day after being released from jail as part of a coronavirus mitigation strategy.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department arrested 26-year-old Edward Williams on Monday on the murder charge as well as charges of gun possession, drug possession, and violent resistance of an officer. Williams was freed from jail last month over fears that crowded inmate populations might result in a localized coronavirus outbreak.
A judge last month had authorized the release of certain prisoners who had committed low-level crimes. Williams now remains held in the county lockup without bond.
