Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb told CNBC's Squawk Box on Tuesday that he is worried that China is underreporting cases of the deadly coronavirus by "tens of thousands."

Gottlieb was the FDA chief until April 2019.

China reported 25 more deaths from the illness Tuesday, raising the total number of dead to at least 106, with more than 4,500 infected. Dozens of cases have also been confirmed in other countries around the world, including Hong Kong, Macao, Taipei, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, France, and the United States.
