Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been arrested in connection with the death of George Floyd.

Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety John Harrington announced on Friday that Chauvin had been taken into custody because of the fatal arrest. It is not yet clear what charges Chauvin is facing.

Chauvin is the former officer seen in the video of Floyd's arrest with his knee on Floyd's neck. He had been with Minneapolis police for 19 years.

The video of the arrest showed Floyd saying that he could not breathe while an officer — identified as Chauvin — knelt on his neck for several minutes.

Police originally said Floyd was resisting arrest and had a medical incident.

Other officers in the video were identified as Thomas Lane and J Alexander Kueng. All four officers involved in the incident were fired a day after Floyd's death.

Floyd's death is currently being investigated by the U.S. Attorney's Office, FBI in Minneapolis, and the Department of Justice Civil Rights division.
