Several French politicians have called on France’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Turkey to be canceled, after Turkish players posed in a photo while giving a military salute.

“[The players] have dedicated their victory to our brave soldiers and fellow martyrs,” the team said in a caption of the photo on Twitter.

The leader of France’s left-wing party France Insoumise, Jean-Luc Melenchon, tweeted:

“If Turkish footballers do the military salute, they must expect to be treated as the soldiers of an enemy army. So we do not play football against them. The basics of sportsmanship are no longer there!”

🔦 The photo follows a controversial move by President Donald Trump to remove U.S. military forces from northern Syria. The removal opens a pathway for Turkey to advance military operations against the Kurds, a strong U.S. ally who fought to dismantle the ISIS caliphate.
