Only 30% of Americans view professional sports positively, according to data from a recent Gallup poll.

More Americans — 40% — view professional sports negatively, the results of the July 30-August 12 poll show. Those numbers are in stark contrast to the results of a similar poll from 2019, in which 45% of respondents said they viewed professional sports positively, while only 25% reported a negative view.

Roughly 550 people participated in the 2020 survey, which has a margin of error of five percentage points.

The NFL, NBA, and MLB all have reported sizable ratings drops for televised games since they have returned from the coronavirus-induced hiatus and included notable displays in support of social justice and, in some cases, the Black Lives Matter movement. Large numbers of players have been protesting by kneeling during the national anthem before games.
