President Trump's approval ratings were positive for the first time in his presidency, Gallup announced on Thursday, a positive sign for the contentious chief executive going into the election season.

Forty-nine percent of voters approve of Trump's job in office, while 48 percent disapprove of it, according to Gallup. The president also showed significant approval numbers among independent voters, with 43 percent giving him a positive rating.

Those numbers are likely driven in part by high voter approval of the economy: 61 percent of Americans believe the economy is improving, while barely more than a third feel it is getting worse.
