The city of Newnan, Georgia, reported that it suffered "heavy damage" from deadly tornadoes Thursday night.

Multiple homes were destroyed and several residents were injured during the storm, including one man who died of a heart attack.

According to several posts on social media, the destruction was described as a "war zone."

Due to "extensive storm damage," Newnan High School announced that all schools in the Coweta County School System would be closed on Friday.

"The tornado came through. We could feel it shaking the house and everything, and I could feel the rain coming down on me," Newnan resident Heather Raider said after she and her two children hid in the bathroom.

Neighbors had to help them out of their home after it was destroyed around them.

"Five people lost their lives and for those families, it will never be the same," said Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade. "Our hearts, our thoughts, and our prayers go to the families, and we are going to do our best to let them know we love them."
