A cargo ship named the MV Alta ran aground Sunday on a rocky stretch of the Irish coast after floating unmanned at sea for more than a year.

Storm Dennis finally brought the vessel to rest after its ghostly journey around the Atlantic Ocean. In September 2018, the U.S. Coastguard rescued the MV Alta's 10-person crew after the ship became damaged beyond what they could repair.

The ship was towed to Guyana but was hijacked. No one knew what happened to the Alta until a ship from the British Navy spotted it adrift in the Atlantic in August 2019. At that point, the vessel appeared to have no crew. The Alta continued floating until Sunday.

Local authorities have asked the public to stay away from the ship for safety reasons. A marine contractor has been scheduled to board and evaluate the vessel, as well as look for pollution and hazardous materials.
