Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam on Friday signed a law repealing numerous abortion restrictions in the state, a political victory for the Virginia Democrats who control the state for the first time in a generation.

The law, which was passed weeks ago prior to the coronavirus outbreak becoming widespread in Virginia and elsewhere, repeals several regulations on termination procedures and clinics in the state, including a mandatory ultrasound and waiting period for women seeking to obtain abortions.

The governor on Friday declared himself "proud to sign [the bill] into law."
