A significant number of high-profile Twitter accounts, including those of billionaires and major political figures, were hacked Wednesday in a massive cryptocurrency scam.

Billionaires like Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Warren Buffet, as well former President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, all saw their accounts compromised. In each case, the hacked accounts posted tweets instructing their followers to send $1,000 in bitcoin to a particular address. The message promised to double the contributions in return.

Twitter responded to the security breach by disabling several features, including tweeting, for multiple verified accounts.

Despite their efforts, it appeared that scammers were able to accumulate more than $100,000 within an hour of the malicious postings.

Late Wednesday evening, company executives said they think they had found a "coordinated engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems." Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey expressed his regret for the incident.
