Earning the applause of LGBT advocacy groups, the toy maker Hasbro has announced a rebranding of their classic "Mr. Potato Head" that will now be a genderless "Potato Head."
"Hasbro is helping kids to simply see toys as toys, which encourages them to be their authentic selves outside of the pressures of traditional gender norms," said Rich Ferraro, the chief communications officer for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
The toy that was introduced nearly 70 years ago will see its gender-neutral branding hit shelves some time later this year. The rebrand will be accompanied by the release of a Potato Head playset that will allow children to form their own potato families, including ones with multiple moms and/or dads.
The move of catering toy-making to emerging cultural sensibilities is not without precedent. Mattel introduced a gender-neutral line of Barbie dolls in 2019.
Hasbro itself released a new version of the classic board game "Monopoly" in 2019 as well. "Ms. Monopoly" was designed to draw attention to the purported "gender wage gap" by giving female players an additional $40 every time they passed "go."
