The attorney of embattled Chinese pastor Wang Yi released a statement on Tuesday calling for prayers for the imprisoned Christian, quoting another pastor who said Wang "sacrificed himself and became a blessing to the Chinese house church."

Full text of the letter:

"We have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men." (1 Cor. 4:9) This verse is one that Pastor Wang Yi really likes and often quotes. Now, God is continuing his ministry through Wang Yi by moving him from the courtroom to prison. On December 26th, 2019, relevant personnel took Wang Yi's parents to the Chengdu Intermediate Court to apply to attend the trial. In the afternoon, Pastor Wang Yi was secretly tried. His wife Jiang Rong was not allowed to attend the trial. During the trial, Wang Yi pleaded not guilty. In his closing statement, he said that no matter how long his sentence was, he would not appeal. According to those who attended the trial, Pastor Wang Yi was much thinner than he was before, but he was in a good mental state.

At the sentencing on the morning of December 30th, 2019, Pastor Wang Yi was convicted of two crimes and sentenced to 9 years in prison. After the sentencing, authorities only published a "one-sentence report" on the Chengdu Intermediate Court website. The report did not provide any details about his so-called crimes. A few days later, the Global Times published a rambling editorial in the style of Hu Xijin that isn't worth my time refuting. There was no "televised confession" like we thought there might be. There was no usual campaign to thoroughly smear his name. This shows that authorities deliberately settled this case quietly.

A pastor described Pastor Wang Yi as a "paratrooper" in one of his sermons, saying, "After he landed in enemy territory, he drew fire and was surrounded by a multitude of soldiers. He sacrificed himself and became a blessing to the Chinese house church."

From now on, may we continue praying for Pastor Wang Yi's health while he serves his sentence, for revival within Early Rain Covenant Church in the midst of this persecution, and for the conscience and future of Chinese society.

🔦 Pastor Wang Yi is the founder of Early Rain Covenant Church, a Presbyterian congregation in the Sichuan city of Chengdu. He was arrested in 2018 on charges of subversion of government power, and sentenced to nine years in prison on December 30. The court also stripped him of his political rights and seized his assets.
