An alarming and inspiring image of a 6-year-old hero is making the rounds on social media after being shared by his aunt.

The young man named Bridger is posing with jarring injuries and cuts to his face, next to his younger sister. According to the caption on Instagram, Bridger put himself between his little sister and the charge of an attacking dog.

The dog bit and scratched him several times before Bridger was able to pull his sister, and himself, to safety. "He grabbed his sister's hand and ran with her to keep her safe," his aunt said.

The little boy is being hailed a hero for his selfless act, having told rescuers that, "If someone had to die, I thought it should be me."

Bridger received approximately 90 stitches to repair his extensive facial injuries and is now resting at home to recover.

According to the Instagram post, the family bears no ill will towards the owners of the dog, whom they call "really great people who have been nothing but kind to Bridger and his family." They also declined donations to a GoFundMe, requesting instead that those who feel inclined to give send donations to the Wounded Warrior Project or another veteran's group called Mission 22.
