The House Judiciary Committee has announced its intent to hold its first public impeachment hearing next week, signaling a new development in the impeachment saga and another step toward President Trump's possible removal from office.
The committee intends to seat a panel of experts who will testify to the constitutional applicability of impeachment in light of Trump's behavior in office. Democrats have leveled a rolling series of accusations at Trump since his election, including that he colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election and that he sought an improper "quid pro quo" relationship with the Ukraine regarding his presumptive 2020 rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.
It is not clear which of the numerous charges the panel of experts will address. The committee said Trump's legal counsel will be permitted to take part in the hearing.
