Instagram will start testing hidden “like” counts for some U.S. users beginning next week, CEO Adam Mosseri announced Friday.
“It’s about young people. The idea is to try and depressurize Instagram, make it less of a competition,” Mosseri explained.
The Facebook-owned company has already tested the feature in seven other countries, likely indicating that they are seeing success with it.
🔦 The idea behind hiding performance metrics is that when “like” counts are visible to everyone, people have the tendency to tailor the content they share around what will receive the strongest reaction. This leads, in many cases, to extreme content and unhealthy conversations.
