Bypassing the City Council, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney on Wednesday ordered the removal of multiple Confederate monuments from Virginia's state capital, arguing that emergency powers grant him the authority to do so unilaterally.

A statue of Stonewall Jackson which has stood in Richmond since 1875 is currently being removed.

In a virtual address to the City Council earlier Wednesday, Stoney said:

"Madame President, it is time. Time to put an end to the lost cause. Replace the racist symbols of oppression and inequality."

Stoney pegged the estimated cost of statue removal at $1.8 million.
