ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead after a raid by U.S. forces in northwestern Syria, President Trump announced Sunday morning, saying he “died as a coward, running and crying”:
Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest as U.S. Special Operations forces closed in on him inside a tunnel after they stormed a compound where the terrorist leader was located. According to the president, Baghdadi surrounded himself with three children before blowing himself up, killing them as well.
Many other ISIS leaders were killed in the operation as well, Trump said. There were no U.S. casualties.
The president had teased the news Saturday night on Twitter:
Baghdadi was the world’s most-wanted man. The U.S. had a $25 million bounty out for information leading to his capture.
President Trump watched the entire operation from the Situation Room, and said about the dead terrorist leader:
“He died like a dog. He died like a coward. He was whimpering, screaming, and crying. And frankly, I think it’s something that should be brought out, so that his followers and all of these young kids that want to leave various countries, including the United States — they should see how he died. He didn’t die a hero, he died a coward. Crying, whimpering, screaming, and bringing three kids with him to die.”
