House and Senate Democrats are urging Nancy Pelosi to submit President Trump's articles of impeachment to the Senate, hoping the Speaker of the House will bring to an end the bizarre stalemate in which she has withheld those articles for nearly a month.
Notably liberal Democrats such as Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy have expressed a desire to see the articles transmitted. Democrats have been demanding certain conditions to the trial before they will send the articles over to the upper chamber, such as witness testimony in the initial phase of the proceedings.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that Republicans have enough votes in the Senate to proceed with the impeachment process outside of Democrats' demands. Impeachment cannot begin before the articles are transmitted to the Senate.
