A group of jihadist militiamen on Wednesday killed at least 25 people in the Ituri province located in the Democratic Republic of Congo's northeastern region.
The pre-dawn attack occurred in Sindani-Akesi.
"The assailants, members of the armed group Cooperative for the Development of the Congo (CODECO), attacked the locality of Sindani-Akesi and targeted civilians. At least 25 people were killed," an official told Anadolu Agency. "Ten injured people had been transferred to a hospital in Bunia..."
Jean Bamanisa, the governor of Ituri province, also confirmed the attack but was unable to determine the exact number of casualties, although he expects "the toll could be heavy."
