Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis took numerous shots at President Trump on Thursday during a keynote address at New York’s annual Alfred E. Smith dinner, saying he “earned his spurs on the battlefield” while “Donald Trump earned his spurs in a letter from a doctor”:

“I do stand before you … having achieved greatness. I am not just an overrated general, I am the greatest, the world’s most overrated general … I’m honored to be considered that by Donald Trump because he also called Meryl Streep an overrated actress. So I guess I’m the Meryl Streep of generals, and frankly that sounds pretty good to me … between me and Meryl, at least we’ve had some victories. Some of you were kind during the reception and asked me if this bothered me to have been rated this way, based on what Donald Trump said. I said, ‘Of course not. I earned my spurs on the battlefield … Donald Trump earned his spurs in a letter from a doctor’ … I think the only person in the military that Mr. Trump doesn’t think is overrated … is Colonel Sanders.”

🔦 The jokes came a day after President Trump called Mattis “the world’s most overrated general.”
