Former vice president and current presidential candidate Joe Biden said on Saturday, "Transgender equality is the civil rights issue of our time," a statement likely made in response to fellow candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) receiving public support from a commentator with a history of controversial statements about transgender individuals.
Sanders, who has surged ahead in the polls, recently received a nod of approval from podcast host Joe Rogan. Rogan has a history of making inflammatory comments about transgender people, such as when he claimed in 2013 that biological men identifying as women want to "play house" and "be a woman in the bedroom."
On Saturday, Biden tweeted his unequivocal support of transgenderism.
"Let's be clear: Transgender equality is the civil rights issue of our time. There is no room for compromise when it comes to basic human rights," he said.
James Shupe, a formerly transgender individual who used to present as female and who now calls transgenderism a "fraud," criticized Biden in a reply tweet, listing what he sees as results of transgender ideology, including "men in women's bathrooms with little girls," "males winning [first] place in female sports," and "males in women's homeless shelters."
"And Biden calls it the civil rights issue of our time. Women, do you agree?" Shupe said.
