Medical device company Johnson & Johnson announced Monday that, in cooperation with the United States government, it will invest $1 billion toward the development of a coronavirus vaccine.

The U.S. government will contribute $421 million in order to build new manufacturing capacity in the United States.

The company's manufacturing plant in the Netherlands can make 300 million doses of the vaccine, a number that Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Paul Stoffels told Reuters "will not be sufficient for the world."

Johnson & Johnson plans to have the vaccine ready for human testing by September and authorized for emergency use in early 2021.
