President Trump on Wednesday announced that he has ordered a federal investigation into the death of George Floyd, a man who died in Minneapolis after an officer pinned him down with his knee on Floyd's neck for at least eight-and-a-half minutes — four of those minutes occurring after Floyd appears to have been unconscious due to the pressure on his neck.

Trump tweeted on Wednesday evening that he has ordered the FBI and DOJ to investigate the death, adding that he has "asked for this investigation to be expedited" and "justice will be served" in the case:
"At my request, the FBI and the Department of Justice are already well into an investigation as to the very sad and tragic death in Minnesota of George Floyd. I have asked for this investigation to be expedited and greatly appreciate all of the work done by local law enforcement. My heart goes out to George's family and friends. Justice will be served!"
