Kanye West has agreed to headline Christian youth event Strength to Stand Student Bible Conference in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, next month. He will be replacing the previously scheduled headliner, comedian John Crist, who was removed after revelations of sexual promiscuity, harassment, and exploitation of young women surfaced last month.
Scott Dawson, who runs the conference, explained in a YouTube video that they were dealt a blow when they had to remove Crist as the featured speaker. He said a friend of his, who knows a pastor who is working with Kanye West, decided to float the idea of the superstar rapper headlining the event as a long-shot.
"I was sitting at home on a Friday afternoon and my phone rang," Dawson said. "I thought it was a telemarketer. And I just picked it up and said, 'This is Scott.' To my shock, on the other end of the line, a voice said, 'Hey Scott, this is Kanye West.'
I thanked him for even considering coming to our conference, to which he stopped me, and he said, 'Scott, after prayer and deliberation, I want you to know I'm not considering it — I'm coming.'"
The conference sold out almost immediately after West's appearance was announced.
