The FBI is now acknowledging it is "aware" of the concerning encounter experienced by an American Airlines flight over New Mexico last Sunday, without confirming or denying whether it has opened up an official investigation.
While looking for the "mayday" distress call from a different United Airlines flight whose engine had caught on fire after take-off in Denver the previous day, radio interceptor and aviation blogger Steve Douglass came across the American Airlines incident by virtue of "pure coincidence."
Douglass released the audio of the American Airlines pilot informing air traffic control that they had witnessed a "cruise missile type of thing" fly over the top of them at 37,000 feet.
American Airlines confirmed the authenticity of the audio, said the flight crew had been debriefed, and encouraged anyone with further questions to direct them to the FBI.
FBI spokesman Frank Connor said that the "FBI is aware of the reported incident" and assured that the agency exists to "work continuously…to share intelligence and protect the public."
