A male student — dressed in a long, glittering dress and a small crown — was given the title “Homecoming Royalty” at a Memphis, Tennessee, high school last Friday night.

White Station High School’s Brandon Allen, who is gay, calls himself the “Queen of Extra.”

The high school switched this year to gender-neutral titles instead of the traditional homecoming king and queen.

The principal of the school defended the choice on Facebook, saying Allen had a right to run under Title IX and that it was the students’ decision to support him.
