Comic book company Marvel has debuted its first-ever transgender character, a 12-year-old named "Mighty Rebekah."

The character was crafted by Marvel as part of its "Hero Project," a web series that explores activist efforts by "several young heroes" across the country. According to Marvel, the comic book was inspired by the activism of one of the series' heroes, a boy who identifies as a girl and who goes by the name Rebekah.

The brief comic, available for free on Marvel's website, depicts Rebekah and several other young children responding to a brick having been thrown through their youth center's window.

"This is who we were born to be. Nobody can change that," Rebekah says at one point.
