Authorities in Mexico have arrested police chief Fidel Alejandro Villegas on suspicion that he is linked to the drug cartel hitmen responsible for the slaughter of three American Mormon women and six children on November 4, 2019.

The families were traveling in three SUVs to Pancho Villa, in Chihuahua, when they got caught up in a dispute between two drug cartels who were fighting for control of the area, according to relatives.

Mexican media outlets reported that Villegas, the Janos municipality police chief, is suspected of having connections to organized crimes although his involvement with the slaughter of the Mormon family is unclear.

The FBI aided in the investigation after President Trump put pressure on Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
