A kayaker missing for days in the Florida Everglades was miraculously found alive on Monday floating on his back in cold water, just hours before rescuers estimate it might have been too late to save him. He was saved in a dramatic rescue caught on video:
Mark Miele, a 67-year-old Virginian kayak enthusiast, had ventured into the extensive wetlands preserve for a week-long excursion. Due back on January 29, his family reported him missing after he failed to return.
Five days later, rescuers located him afloat face-up in a life jacket. He was reportedly experiencing convulsions at the time.
Miele was rescued just in time, according to emergency responders. One of the rescue crew members said that Miele had "been in the water for two solid days, and it's been really cold."
