Several hundred Pakistani girls have been sold to China as brides, according to officials attempting to dismantle the criminal human trafficking ring orchestrating the arrangements.
In total, 629 young girls from Pakistan have become young brides to Chinese men, according to a list obtained by the Associated Press. Many of the victims reportedly come from Pakistan's impoverished Christian minority.
Numerous young women report suffering sexual abuse and forced prostitution upon arriving to China.
Officials in Pakistan say that federal investigations into these crimes have largely ground to a halt, in part due to concerns that any successful prosecutions could damage economic relations between China and Pakistan.
