The mother of a newborn baby that was found in a black garbage bag inside a trash can behind a North Carolina church last week was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Maryuri Estefany Calix-Macedo, 21, has been indicted for first-degree attempted murder and was taken to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center to be assessed before being transferred to the New Hanover County Jail. She is being held on $800,000 secured bond.
Last Thursday, a woman named Cynthia Burton rescued Calix-Macedo's newborn baby boy from a trash can near Christ Community Church in Wilmington, NC.
Burton quickly ran to a nearby apartment complex and flagged down a couple to call 911, while she unwrapped the baby's umbilical from his neck and wiped away the blood.
"Every time I close my eyes, I felt that I was reopening the trash bag and seeing the baby... but the good thing," Burton said at the time. "I knew he was alive when I found him, and I knew that was a good thing. But I knew I didn't have a lot a lot of time."
EMS transported the baby to the hospital and reports indicate he is doing well.
