NASCAR released a statement Wednesday evening banning the display of the Confederate flag at all events and properties.

The statement from NASCAR reads:

? NASCAR is very popular in the South, where the display of the Confederate flag is still popular and commonplace.

According to Wikipedia:

Many Southerners associate the Confederate battle flag with pride in Southern heritage, states' rights, historical commemoration of the American Civil War; while others around the country associate it with historical revisionism and glorification of the Civil War, racism, slavery, segregation, white supremacy, attempted intimidation of African-Americans and treason.
