NBA approves 22-team return-to-play format to finish season

The NBA Board of Governors Thursday voted 29-1 to approve a 22-team format to resume the 2019-20 season in Orlando, Florida, the league announced.

The 16 teams in playoff position when play was suspended will be joined by the six teams within six games of the eighth seed in their respective conferences.

All teams will play eight regular-season games each before a possible play-in tournament to determine the last playoff spots.

The NBA will then proceed with the traditional four-round playoff consisting of best-of-seven series before crowning a champion no later than October 12.

Players will undergo daily coronavirus testing and will be required to enter quarantine and receive treatment if a test comes back positive. Games would go on as scheduled.
