A noose was found hanging in the garage stall of Bubba Wallace at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama on Sunday, NASCAR officials reported.

"Late this afternoon, NASCAR was made aware that a noose was found in the garage stall of the 43 team. We are angry and outraged, and cannot state strongly enough how seriously we take this heinous act," NASCAR said in a statement.

The stock car league said it "launched an immediate investigation" to identify the person or people responsible and "eliminate them from the sport."

According to ESPN's Marty Smith, Wallace never saw the noose. It was first seen by a member of Wallace's team, who informed NASCAR officials immediately.

Wallace released his own statement on Twitter Sunday evening, saying he was "incredibly saddened" by the "despicable act of racism and hatred."

? Earlier this month, Wallace, a native of Alabama and the sport's only African-American driver, led the initiative to have the Confederate flag banned from all NASCAR events.
