Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam on Tuesday signed a ban on "conversion therapy" for minors in Virginia, forbidding psychiatrists from helping children who wish to abate same-sex attraction and also making it a crime to help children come to terms with their biological sex.
Virginia has become the 20th state to enact such a ban. In recent years, as transgender activism has increased in popularity, these policies have grown to include prohibitions on doctors who wish to help young patients embrace their biological sex rather than their "gender identity."
Northam, while signing the bill, referred to "conversion therapy" as "junk science" and "dangerous." He claimed to be "proud" to have signed the bill into law.
? This legislative session, Virginia also became the first Southern state to forbid discrimination of LGBT individuals in employment, housing, and public accommodations.
