As part of its "legislative day of action" at the Virginia state capitol, the National Rifle Association was handing out 30-round ammunition magazines to members who showed up to protest a new slate of gun control initiatives being considered in the state.

Virginia Democrats, who hold a majority of both houses of the state government as well as the governorship, have proposed a broad new set of gun control policies since taking office, including extensive bans on large classes of weapons and restricting the number of guns that law-abiding citizens can purchase per month.

The NRA called the rash of proposals an "extreme gun ban." It said it had 1,000 of the high-capacity magazines to distribute to activists who showed up.
