De Blasio: Large group protests OK but religious services not because of "400 years of American racism"

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told a reporter for a Jewish newspaper Tuesday that "400 years of American racism" is what justifies his decision to allow mass protests but not religious services, saying, "I'm sorry, that is not the same question."

A reporter for Hebrew-language daily newspaper Hamodia asked the mayor why protests are allowed when prayer services are not.

He responded:

"When you see a nation, an entire nation, simultaneously grappling with an extraordinary crisis seeded in 400 years of American racism — I'm sorry, that is not the same question as the understandably aggrieved storeowner or the devout religious person who wants to go back to services."
