Former president Barack Obama on Tuesday slammed the social media-driven phenomenon of “cancel culture,” criticizing Internet activists who attack others simply as a means to affirm how “woke” they are.

“Cancel culture” is a recently popularized trend in which people found to have even minor, inoffensive flaws are hounded, attacked, vilified, and debased online and in traditional media, to the point that many of them lose their jobs and have to go into seclusion.

Obama, speaking at a summit of the Obama Foundation, said such behavior is short-sighted.

“This idea of purity and you’re never compromised and you’re always politically woke and all that stuff — you should get over that quickly,” he said.
