Now-former Fort Worth police officer Aaron Dean, 34, has been charged with murder for shooting a woman through the window of her home, killing her.

Police bodycam footage shows Dean searching around the home of Atatiana Jefferson, 28, who was inside caring for her 8-year-old nephew on Saturday. He walked around the side of the house, noticed a figure through the bedroom window, and fired a shot through the glass a split-second after shouting at Jefferson to show her hands. He said he had “perceived a threat.”

Dean did not identify himself as a police officer on the video, and the chief of police said there was no indication that any of the officers even knocked on the front door.

“Nobody looked at this video and said that there’s any doubt that this officer acted inappropriately,” the chief said.

Police had been called to the house for a welfare check after neighbors called a non-emergency line to report an open door at the home.

Dean has since been released on bond.

🔦 The incident occurred roughly 30 miles from where former Dallas cop Amber Guyger killed Botham Jean in his own apartment last year. In both cases, the officer was white and the victim was black, inflaming racial tensions in the area and nation.
