The oldest living American has passed away at the age of 114, her family has confirmed.
Alelia Murphy, who died last Saturday, was born in 1905. She moved to the Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem in 1926, drawn there by the Harlem Renaissance. She was widowed in 1953 and had supported her two children by working as a seamstress.
Murphy credited her longevity both to God and to "being a good person." New York State Senator Brian Benjamin (D-30) called her a "Harlem landmark" prior to her death.
The title of oldest living American has now passed to Hester Ford, a North Carolinian woman who is also 114 years old.
