Tanzilya Bisembeyeva, believed to be the oldest person in the world, has died at 123-years-old.

Bisembeyeva, who lived under Stalin and other oppressive regimes, reportedly credited her long lifespan to “hard work and optimism.”

After losing her first child in their infancy, Bisembeyeva eventually went on to have three sons while in her fifties. She now has 10 grandchildren and over two-dozen great-grandchildren.

Bisembeyeva’s recounted one of her happiest days:

“It was the day when I first entered my house,” she said. “It was very small and I stoked the stove with wood, but it was my home. I built it myself, the best house in the world. I lived there for 60 years.”

Villagers from the town where she lived her last years gathered for a ceremony as she was laid to rest earlier this week.
