The Trump administration gave Michelle Obama an unexpected gift on her 56th birthday, announcing Friday that they are rolling back the former First Lady's signature school lunch policy.

The former policy mandated more fruits and vegetables, reduced sodium levels, and no whole milk in school lunches nationwide. The Department of Agriculture today announced a plan to allow districts "more common-sense flexibility" in how they regulate their lunch plans.

A 2019 study by the USDA found that the Obama-era policies had a "positive and significant influence on nutritional quality" in student lunchrooms. One critic warned that the revised Trump rules would lead to students choosing "pizza, burgers, french fries" and other unhealthy foods in school.
