A rookie firefighter in Yonkers, New York, experienced a one-in-a-million first day on the job when he helped deliver a baby during the very first call he responded to.

Michael Iacovello, who was serving his first shift as a probationary firefighter in Yonkers' Engine Co. 303, responded with his more experienced firefighting comrades to a call for a woman's unexpected labor. Assessing that the baby was "ready to come out," Iacovello helped deliver her, even cutting the newborn's umbilical cord.

The baby was named after her mother, Obadianah Boakye-Aboagye.

"The training just kicked in," Iacovello said.
