A crowd of more than 200 Antifa supporters started a riot in Tacoma, Washington, on Sunday night in response to an incident over the weekend where a police officer hit pedestrians with his vehicle in an attempt to break up an illegal street race.
Buildings were evacuated as the rioters set fires, smashed vehicles, and destroyed businesses downtown.
At one point, the crowd attempted to break open the gates of the local Pierce County jail, yelling "Free them all" as they waved an Antifa flag.
The mob shouted "black lives matter" as they invited those in nearby apartments to join in on the destruction. Many of the rioters were allegedly not from the area.
Tacoma police also arrested a a 32-year-old man and 36-year-old woman who were on the roof of a building with a handgun, knifes, and a baton.
The riot was reportedly a response to a Saturday incident where a 58-year-old patrol officer hit two pedestrians with his cruiser after responding to an illegal street race and being surrounded by a mob of people that began banging on his vehicle's windows.
The officer said he was fearful of his safety and attempted to escape from the crowd. Both individuals injured by the officer's vehicle went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
