More than a third of Americans reported watching less sports over the last year due to the increase of political advocacy, according to a new poll.

As leagues such as the NBA and NFL focused on Black Lives Matter and other left-leaning social causes, 34.5% of Americans said they had decreased their consumption of sports broadcasting.

Only 11% said they had watched more, while 56.3% said their viewing remained the same.

"Ratings across all major sports were down in 2020, the result of a range of factors including time-shifted sports calendars and the presidential election, but it's clear from this poll that politics and social justice had some impact on the ratings decline," said Jay Busbee for the Yahoo Sports poll.

Nearly 40% of men said the politicization had driven them away, compared to only 28% of women.

The divide was largest among political lines. More than half — 53% — of Republicans said they watched less, compared to only 13.7% of Democrats. Yet even among independents, nearly 40% reported watching less.

🔦 Despite many people being stuck at home due to COVID-19, leagues that experienced record-low ratings in the past year included the NBA, NFL, and NASCAR.
