The Massachusetts state parole board recently considered the possibility of releasing the woman who convinced her boyfriend via text messages to kill himself.

Michelle Carter is a 22-year-old who was imprisoned for voluntary manslaughter after using text message to encourage her then-boyfriend to follow through on his attempted suicide using carbon monoxide. She appeared before the board in a closed-door meeting. Carter’s attorneys had argued prior to her conviction that the texts were constitutionally protected speech.

Carter has served seven months of a 15-month jail sentence.
