A Pentagon spokesman fired back at the New York Times editorial board for its decision to publish a weekend editorial accusing the U.S. military of "celebrating" white supremacy.

On Sunday, Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman took to Twitter to blast the Times not just for the content of its editorial, but its decision to publish it on Memorial Day weekend.

The Times criticized the military's failure to rename bases that maintain the names of Confederate officers, who it deemed "white supremacist traitors."

Hoffman responded by defending the defense department as "the most diverse meritocracy in the country."

"We have many stories of valor still waiting to be told this Memorial Day weekend," Hoffman said.
